...were interesting. haha.
The evening was held at Fabric Night Club around Farringdon way, it certainly wasn't quite what we imagined. We had made up some flyers in preparation, it seemed like a good opportunity to chuck around our names... designing and printing them in only a couple of hours was a bit tight but they seemed to do the job. We'll just wait and see if anyone actually picked one up... It was pretty dark so I'm surprised anyone saw anything!
The promise of a packet of chips was offered although the portions left a lot to be desired... The night began with a Canadian comedian - he took a couple of minutes to warm up, but once he got going he was actually quite funny - in a weird, aggressive & slightly deranged way... he certainly got the crowd going.
After an introductory speech by the Founder of the Chip Shop Awards & The Editor (?) of The Drum magazine, we got down to the nominations. There were a few categories, some being awarded 'Chips' others 'Vinegars' and some categories - both awards. He explained that due to the nature of the awards the 'CSA' are often sued by various commercial companies, perhaps this explains the small portions of chips?
It took a while but our category was practically last, but we were successful, both entries in our category received 'Chip' awards. One thing that made me laugh was that, although the D&AD pencil is certainly coveted - if you ever get to pick one up - they are practically weightless... the Chip is solid as a rock.
The Grand Prix was selected from all the Chip winners and was awarded to an incredibly funny viral for Specsavers (a spoof of the Barclaycard flume ad) It can be found as one of the video entries here
We followed the awards with a few celebratory beers and a quick chat with Mike McKenna for some wise words of wisdom. We saw John Jessup was floating around but we didn't get a chance to chat with him...
The final nominations, vinegars & chip can be found here

Hows the industry looking from a placement prospective with this recession and all?
Any junior teams getting hired and that?
Im a mid weight with a job (luckily) but from what I hear its as dead as a dodoe out there...
Well, I have no idea. haha.
It's all we've no recession and all, so if it improves, that will be great, if it doesn't we wouldn't know any different.
I think there's the odd hiring here and there but not a great deal, if you're a good enough team someone will take you on - or at least give you a placement (that's my theory anyway).
It's pretty tough, I know of a few guys who are getting out, or at least going on a hiatus, i'm sure there will be more people competing than ever this summer with the new grads coming out!
Any Junior positions looking likely where you're at? haha.
You have no idea how the industry is from a placement level due to the recession?
Aren't you talking to creative directors and teams about it?
And no, there's no junior places at my place at probably wont be for a while to be honest.
I don't mean it quite so literally - just a passing comment. I mean it's up in the air.
It's different with every single person you talk to.
The general consensus is that it's a tough time, there are a few opportunities around, but you have to be lucky to find them, keeping plugging away, money is tight, but it has been said that's when people become more creative, more driven and work harder to get one of those opportunities.
We're using every avenue available to us ...and those that aren't.
Yeah well, its always tough, that'll never change. They're right about being more creative. Things will get better and you're doing the right thing.
How long you been out?
I'd have replied sooner, although it's slightly difficult when you forget your log-in.
We've been out bang on a year now. After graduating last June and going straight into JWT, we've been lucky enough not to have been out of a placement for longer than a few weeks.
Unfortunately, not lucky enough to have landed a that job though.
Yeah, it took me exactly a year to get a job. Its a nightmare. Especially in the winter when life's depressing enough.
Keep plugging away and don't do a jai and wal.
The markets getting better, or at least wont get any worse. I think.
Yeah, I definitely prefer the summer months. That's for sure. Do we get the privilege of knowing who you actually are or where you work?
Anonymity is always fine but it's nice to know who you're talking to sometimes...
